Shougang Makes Breakthrough in 0.2 mm Ultra‑thin Electrical Steel: New Progress in Domestic Production of Core Materials for Humanoid Robots

2026 07/30

Electrical steel is a core material for efficient conversion between electrical energy and magnetic energy. Widely used in new‑energy vehicles, transformers and high‑end home appliances, it is known as the “pearl on the crown” of the steel industry.

To meet the stringent requirements of humanoid robot motors for lightweight design, high torque density and low core loss, Shougang completed more than 600 formula tests through one‑year‑long R&D efforts and successfully developed 0.2 mm ultra‑thin electrical steel specially for humanoid robots. Compared with conventional grades, its core loss is reduced by 20%‑30%, satisfying joint motors’ demands for flexible operation, low heat generation and low power consumption.
Booming growth of humanoid robots, low‑altitude‑economy UAVs and intelligent terminals unlock huge market potential for ultra‑thin high‑performance electrical steel. It is estimated that 10 000 units of humanoid robots will consume roughly hundreds of tons of electrical steel, generating a market worth hundreds of billions of yuan in the future.

During the 14th Five‑Year Plan period, China has fully mastered manufacturing technologies for high‑grade electrical steel. Its electrical steel for new‑energy vehicles and UHV power grids have reached internationally‑advanced standards. Looking ahead to the 15th Five‑Year Plan, market demand for electrical steel will keep growing driven by new‑energy vehicles, power‑grid construction, robots and the low‑altitude economy.
